Long Compton
Jacqui & Mick’s pick
The Red Lion
Country inn · Seasonal pub food · Fireside
One of our personal favourites and an easy one to love: a proper Cotswold village inn with warm rooms, good seasonal cooking and the sort of atmosphere that works just as well for a leisurely lunch as it does for an unhurried supper.
One of oursIf you are exploring the Rollright Stones or heading towards Chipping Norton, this is exactly the sort of place we would build the day around.
Charlbury
Jacqui & Mick’s pick
The Bull
Michelin Guide · Open-fire cooking · Beautiful pub
Another of our favourites. The Bull feels polished without becoming formal, with characterful rooms, open-fire cooking and ingredient-led dishes that make the food feel quietly serious while the pub itself stays relaxed.
Our Charlbury pickCome for a long lunch or make it the main event of the evening. It is especially lovely when you want somewhere that feels distinctly Cotswolds without feeling predictable.

The Farmer's Dog
British produce · Pub day · Book ahead
A personal favourite for a completely different kind of Cotswold pub outing, built around British farming, British produce and a lively sense of theatre. It is somewhere we would treat as part of the day rather than simply somewhere to stop for lunch.
Worth planning aheadPub tables can be difficult to secure at busy times, so check releases early. The wider site makes it an easy place to spend longer than you first intended.
Charlbury
The Bell
Michelin Guide · Daylesford produce · Orchard garden
A beautifully restored seventeenth-century pub with modern British cooking rooted in seasonal produce, much of it coming from Daylesford. In warmer weather the orchard garden is a particularly lovely place to lose an afternoon.
For a long, easy lunchThe Bull and The Bell make Charlbury unusually well supplied with good tables. Choose The Bell when you want a little more space, a garden and an easygoing pub rhythm.
Swerford · near Chipping Norton
The Boxing Hare
Fine dining · Seasonal British · Country setting
A destination gastropub with food at the heart of the experience. The kitchen leans into carefully sourced British produce and seasonal cooking, but the setting remains warm, relaxed and unmistakably country.
When dinner is the planKeep this for an evening when everyone is happy to make the meal the occasion. It is also a strong Sunday-lunch choice.
Churchill · near Chipping Norton
The Chequers, Churchill
Gastropub · Fireside · Village green
Flagstone floors, scrubbed beams, a proper fire and food that draws people well beyond the village. It has the character of a traditional Cotswold pub, but with a more considered, grown-up approach to the kitchen.
A very Cotswold afternoonChurchill is tiny and lovely. Pair a village wander with lunch here, or settle in for supper when you want somewhere cosy rather than formal.
South Newington
The Duck on the Pond
Michelin Guide · Farm to fork · Kitchen garden
A small family-run pub and restaurant with a genuinely food-led feel, drawing on local suppliers and its own kitchen garden. It is one of the quieter choices in this part of Oxfordshire and all the better for it.
For people who care about the foodGo for the seasonal à la carte menu or one of the more considered set and tasting options, rather than squeezing it into a rushed day.
Chadlington
The Tite Inn
Village pub · Local ales · Relaxed
A much more traditional village-pub proposition, tucked down at Mill End in Chadlington. Come here when what you want is warmth, good beer, straightforward British food and somewhere that still feels rooted in its village.
Keep this one relaxedA good counterpoint to the more polished dining pubs nearby — especially after a walk or for an unfussy lunch.
Ramsden
The Royal Oak
Village inn · Seasonal pub food · Garden
A handsome village inn serving thoughtful pub food built around fresh seasonal produce. It manages to feel polished and comfortable without losing the reason you came to a village pub in the first place.
A lovely detour from CharlburyRamsden sits south of Charlbury, so it works especially well when the day is taking you through the Evenlode Valley rather than back towards Stow.
Ascott-under-Wychwood
The Swan
Modern British · Stylish pub · Dog friendly
A stylish sixteenth-century inn with modern British food, a lovely wisteria-covered terrace and enough personality to feel special without becoming precious. A particularly useful option if part of the group wants a smart pub and part simply wants somewhere comfortable.
Easy to settle intoIt is about ten minutes from Chipping Norton and sits neatly between Charlbury and the Wychwoods, making it a useful table to know about.
Shipton-under-Wychwood
The Lamb
Proper pub · Simple food · Garden
A historic stone pub where the emphasis is refreshingly simple: good pub food, a straightforward wine list, a cosy bar and a big garden. It feels confident without needing to overcomplicate things.
For a proper pub supperOne to keep in mind when the mood is good food and a pint rather than a dressed-up occasion.
Wootton · towards Woodstock
The Killingworth Castle
Michelin Guide · 3 AA Rosettes · Special meal
One of the strongest food-led pubs within reach of this corner of Oxfordshire, with seasonal, wild and organic cooking in a historic village setting. It is a little further east, but worth knowing about when the table itself is the reason for the drive.
For the serious food stopThis is the one to add when the day is taking you towards Woodstock or Blenheim and you want lunch or dinner to be part of the occasion.
Chipping Norton · town centre
The Chequers, Chipping Norton
Historic pub · Local produce · Theatre neighbour
Right in the centre of Chipping Norton, this is a useful town option when you want good pub food without driving back out into the villages. The kitchen focuses on fresh seasonal produce and the building itself is one of the oldest in town.
Handy before the theatreIt sits beside Chipping Norton Theatre, so keep it in mind for an early supper or a drink when you already have an evening in town planned.
If we were choosing:
The Red Lion, The Bull and The Farmer's Dog are three of our own favourites.
Beyond those, this whole pocket is unusually strong — from food-led destination
pubs to the sort of village places where a long lunch can quietly become the afternoon.
For a group of eight, weekend tables are worth booking ahead.
