Planning your arrival

Getting here
& getting settled.

A few practical details that are useful to have before you leave home.

When can you arrive?

Standard check-in is from 3pm. Before your stay, you will receive the arrival information you need to find the Barn, park up and settle in easily.

Can you arrive early or leave later?

Sometimes, but it depends entirely on the changeover around your stay. Standard check-in is 3pm and checkout is 10am, so please do not plan around a different time unless it has been specifically agreed.

If you need a very early arrival, booking the previous night is usually the only way to guarantee it. A modestly earlier check-in or later checkout may occasionally be possible once the housekeeping schedule is known. Ask in advance and, if it can be offered, any charge will be confirmed before you agree.

What time do you need to check out?

Checkout is by 10am. If a different time would make your plans easier, it is worth asking before your stay; it may be possible where the changeover schedule allows.

Where do you park?

There is comfortable guest parking for up to six cars. You can park very close to the front door, which is particularly useful when unloading luggage, shopping or little ones.

The driveway is gravel and is shared with the main house, so please keep the through-route clear. Your arrival information will show you the guest parking area.

What if you are arriving by train?

Stratford-upon-Avon, Moreton-in-Marsh and Banbury can all work well, so the best station often depends on where you are travelling from rather than simply choosing the closest one.

Stratford-upon-AvonA useful option from Birmingham and the Midlands, with a taxi rank at the station.
Moreton-in-MarshParticularly useful for journeys on the Great Western route; taxis are available at the station.
BanburyThe furthest of the three but still very workable - roughly 25–30 minutes by pre-booked taxi depending on traffic, with a taxi rank at the station.

For a group, pre-booking one larger vehicle for the final leg is usually much easier than trying to find several taxis when the train arrives.

Should you book taxis in advance?

Yes - especially for dinner, weddings and evenings in Stratford or Warwick. Rural taxis are much easier when arranged ahead, and larger vehicles for six to eight guests are worth reserving as early as you can.

Miles Private Hire, Shipston - 01608 661555 · a good local option

Shipston Taxis - 01608 661592

Shakespeare Taxis, Stratford - 01789 266100

Ideal Taxis, Stratford - 01789 290444

Always confirm the collection point, number of passengers and return journey when booking. Availability changes quickly on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Where is useful for fuel?

Fuel is easy to find in several directions from the Barn, so there is no need to make a special detour. A few useful options are:

Moreton-in-MarshEsso on Stow Road, plus the Shell/Rowborough forecourt at Stretton-on-Fosse on the approach to Moreton.
Tesco, StratfordBirmingham Road, CV37 0UA - often a good one to check if price matters; the filling station is open 24 hours.
Shell, StratfordEvesham Road, CV37 9AS - another 24-hour option.

Pump prices change constantly, so “cheapest” can never be guaranteed - if you are already heading into Stratford, Tesco is often worth checking first.

Where is nicest for groceries on the way in?

If you want the first fridge-fill to feel a little more special, there are several very good stops before you fall back on a standard supermarket.

Taste of the CountryShipston Market Place - excellent for local bread, pastries, cheese, charcuterie, deli food and lovely things for the first evening.
Fosseway Garden CentreMoreton-in-Marsh - a substantial food hall and in-store butcher as well as the garden centre.
Stratford Garden CentreClifford Chambers - Pownalls fine food shop is useful for higher-quality pantry and deli-style treats.
WaitroseRosebird Centre, Shipston Road, Stratford - a good full-shop option with bakery, deli, meat and fish counters.
Everyday basicsShipston has a Co-op on the High Street and Tesco Express on Church Street.

Supermarket, grocery and takeaway deliveries reach the Barn well. Use the full address from your arrival information and put “The Cotswold Barn” in the delivery note.

There is usually some ice in the freezer, but if you are planning drinks for eight people it is sensible to pick up an extra bag with your shopping rather than rely on how much is left.

What if you arrive late and have not eaten?

You are not stranded. The Lion in Tredington is very close, and The Howard Arms, The Fuzzy Duck and several places in Shipston are also useful depending on the time and day.

The Barn also gets a surprisingly wide choice on Deliveroo and Uber Eats, including both food and groceries. Put the Barn address into the app to see what is delivering at that moment.

Pub opening hours and kitchen hours are not always the same, so if you are arriving late, check last food orders or call ahead before setting off.

Can you have parcels or shopping delivered?

Yes. Couriers generally find the property without difficulty. Occasionally a parcel is left at the main house instead of the Barn; if that happens, the hosts will let you know.

For anything time-sensitive, add “The Cotswold Barn” clearly to the delivery instructions rather than relying on the postcode alone.

Where can you charge an electric car?

There is no guest EV charging point at the Barn, and cars should not be charged from the Barn’s domestic sockets. Happily, there are several useful options nearby and in Stratford.

The Lion, Tredington The closest useful option: a ChargePoint unit with two Type 2 connectors rated at around 22kW. It is for pub patrons, so it works particularly well if you are stopping for a drink or meal. Check access and availability with the pub when you visit.
Shipston area Public provision around Shipston is changing and new council charging is being progressed. Rather than relying on a particular town-centre bay, check a live charging map before setting off.
Stratford-upon-Avon Arden Street car park has eight EV bays, Bridgeway Multi-Storey has two and Church Street has two with restricted public-access hours. Stratford Park & Ride also has four charging points, with free parking while the vehicle is plugged in.

Warwickshire’s council charging network is changing provider during 2026, so individual chargers can occasionally be unavailable. Check live status in your charging app or on Zapmap before making a special journey to one.

During your stay

A few things
you may be wondering.

The little details that are useful to know once you are here.

Will you see the hosts during your stay?

The hosts live in the main house across the driveway. The Barn and its guest areas are yours to enjoy, so you can expect plenty of privacy, with someone nearby if you ever need a hand with anything.

Is the Barn suitable if you need step-free access?

The Barn itself is all on one level. A car can be parked very close to the front door; the driveway is gravel and there is a single step into the Barn.

A ramp can be arranged in advance if needed. If accessibility is important to your stay, ask before booking so the entrance, doorways and bathroom arrangements can be talked through against your particular requirements rather than leaving you to guess from photographs.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Yes. Wi-Fi is available in the Barn, and the joining details are included with the guest information rather than published on the website.

What coffee machine is there?

There is a Tassimo machine in the kitchen. If you have a favourite Tassimo drink or particular pod you always use, it is worth bringing a few with you.

Is there anything worth packing for the weather?

The hilltop setting is part of what makes the Barn so special, but it can also feel a little cooler and breezier than the villages below. If you hope to sit outside in spring, autumn or on a cooler summer evening, a warm jumper is very worth throwing in the car.

Where is best for last-minute essentials?

Shipston-on-Stour is the easiest place for the things that inevitably get forgotten. You will find a Co-op on the High Street, Tesco Express on Church Street and a Boots pharmacy on Sheep Street, all close enough to combine in one quick trip.

Sunday and Bank Holiday hours can be shorter, so it is worth checking opening times before you leave the Barn.

What if you need a pharmacy or medical help?
PharmacyBoots, 12 Sheep Street, Shipston-on-Stour, CV36 4AF. At present it opens Monday–Saturday and is closed on Sundays; check current hours before travelling.
Minor injuryStratford Hospital has a Minor Injuries Unit, currently operating Tuesday–Thursday, 9am–4pm. Because these hours can change, NHS 111 is the best place to check where to go.
Urgent adviceUse NHS 111 online or call 111 if you need urgent medical advice and are unsure which service is appropriate.
EmergencyWarwick Hospital has a 24-hour Emergency Department for serious or life-threatening illness or injury. Call 999 in an emergency.

Healthcare opening arrangements can change, particularly at weekends and Bank Holidays, so use NHS 111 for current advice rather than driving to a service simply because it appears on this page.

What should you bring for a baby?

If you need infant equipment, it is worth confirming this before your stay. Please bring your own cot bedding, as little ones can have sensitive skin and something familiar from home is often more comfortable.

What if you need something specific for your stay?

If access, infant equipment, an unusual arrival plan or something else matters to your group, ask before you travel so it can be checked and sorted in advance.

The most useful questions to ask early are the ones that affect whether the Barn will work for you - step-free access, bathroom layout, sleeping arrangements for little ones or transport after an event.
