Out from the Barn

The Cotswolds one day.
Shakespeare country the next.

From our corner of Warwickshire, the North Cotswolds and Stratford are easy directions to take, with Warwick and Leamington close enough for a proper day out and Cheltenham, Oxford or Blenheim there when you feel like going a little further. Choose one area, enjoy it properly, and leave a little of the day for being here.

01 Close to home

Tredington, Shipston
& Ilmington

For a gentle first day

You do not have to head far to make a day of it. Start with a walk from the Barn, head into Shipston for coffee and provisions, or spend a little time wandering Ilmington.

A simple plan

Coffee in Shipston, a stroll around Ilmington, then back to the Barn with something for supper.

02 The classic Cotswolds

Chipping Campden
& Broadway

For stone streets and browsing

Take your time along Campden’s High Street, or spend a morning among Broadway’s shops and galleries. Add a garden or the views around Broadway Tower if you would like a little more to the day.

A simple plan

Choose Campden with Hidcote, or Broadway with the Tower. Leave room for lunch rather than trying to fit in everything.

03 Market-town mornings

Moreton-in-Marsh
& Stow-on-the-Wold

For coffee, shops and a wander

Moreton makes an easy starting point for cafés and independent shops, with Batsford Arboretum nearby. Stow is a good choice for a browse around its square and time spent among the shops.

A simple plan

Pick a town for the morning. Add a garden or a long lunch, then head home before the day becomes a checklist.

04 Beside the Windrush

Bourton-on-the-Water
& the Slaughters

For riverside wandering, stone villages and a family day

The River Windrush runs through Bourton beneath its low stone bridges, with shops and cafés on either side. Add Birdland or the Model Village if you are travelling with children, then slow things down again in Lower Slaughter or Upper Slaughter for one of the prettiest village detours nearby.

A simple plan

Go to Bourton early, enjoy the river before the busiest part of the day, have lunch, then finish with a quieter wander through the Slaughters.

05 A change of scene

Stratford-upon-Avon

For the river and an evening out

Spend some time by the Avon, explore Shakespeare’s town or plan your visit around an RSC performance. Stratford works as a day out, but it can just as easily be the reason to dress for dinner.

A simple plan

Book the performance first, reserve a table around it, and leave time for a riverside walk.

06 Historic Warwickshire

Warwick
& Leamington Spa

For castle walls, Regency streets and a smarter town day

Warwick Castle may be the headline, but the old town is worth giving time to as well: Market Square, the Lord Leycester and Hill Close Gardens all add another side to the day. Nearby Leamington Spa feels quite different, with elegant Regency streets, Jephson Gardens, independent shops and plenty of places to stop for coffee or lunch.

A simple plan

Choose Warwick when history is the main event, or Leamington for gardens, shopping and lunch. If you fancy both, let one be the morning and the other an easy afternoon rather than trying to see everything.

07 A longer day out

Cheltenham

For Regency streets, shopping and lunch

A different sort of Cotswolds day: grand Regency architecture, independent shopping, galleries, gardens and a strong food scene. It is particularly good when a festival, race day or exhibition gives you a reason to go.

A simple plan

Start around Montpellier and the Promenade, browse for a while, book somewhere lovely for lunch and check what is on before you travel.

08 A full day out

Oxford, Woodstock
& Blenheim Palace

For dreaming spires, grand rooms and a proper day out

Oxford deserves the whole day if the city is your focus: Radcliffe Square, the university quarter, a college or museum and time to browse the Covered Market. In the other direction, Woodstock makes a lovely base for visiting Blenheim Palace, with the town itself worth leaving time for before or after the estate.

A simple plan

Choose Oxford or Blenheim as the main event rather than trying to do both properly. For Oxford, use the Park & Ride. For Blenheim, add a slow lunch or wander in Woodstock.

If food is the plan

Daylesford.
Kingham.
A table for lunch.

Build a day around Daylesford’s farmshop, food and homeware, with time in Kingham before heading back. It is a lovely direction to take when browsing and lunch are all you really want on the agenda.

We have put our favourite places to eat on their own page, so you can choose the meal first and let the rest follow.

Still more directions

A little further.

Burford and Chipping Norton are useful names to keep in mind too, particularly if the drive is part of the pleasure. There is no need to collect villages; choose the place that suits the day and enjoy it properly.

Our way to do it

One good plan.
Room around it.

Choose

A village, a garden or a performance. Let one thing anchor the day.

Book

The table or tickets that matter, especially when there are eight of you.

Leave

Time for a coffee, a detour or an early return to the terrace.

Getting around

A few useful things.

A car gives you the most flexibility for exploring from the Barn. If arriving by train, Moreton-in-Marsh is a useful station; arrange your onward taxi in advance.

For Stratford, Warwick or Leamington, it is worth booking the journey home if nobody wants to drive. For Oxford, use the Park & Ride rather than planning to drive into the centre. For Blenheim, check palace and park opening arrangements before setting off. Attraction opening days can change, particularly outside the main season.
